The federal government announced funding for HTEC to install a hydrogen refuelling station at a 7-Eleven/ESSO off the Trans-Canada Highway in Kelowna, B.C.
HTEC is a hydrogen fuel supplier in Vancouver, B.C. The goal of having the company install the station is to provide drivers with more options and to support the decarbonization of the transportation sector. A hydrogen option also fits well with the government’s ambitious framework: Hydrogen Strategy for Canada.
“This station is a significant milestone for HTEC and for the hydrogen industry in Canada, specifically B.C.,” said HTEC President and CEO Colin Armstrong in a statement. “We are proud to open our Kelowna station and continue to fuel the drive to hydrogen in British Columbia’s interior.”
The funding, announced by the Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, represents a federal investment of $1 million provided through NRCan’s Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment. Furthermore, additional funding was provided by HTEC and the Canadian Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association.
“We’re giving Canadians cleaner transportation options to get to where they need to go by making zero-emission vehicle charging and refuelling infrastructure more accessible,” said Wilkinson in a statement.
The federal government says it is building a coast-to-coast fast-charging network for electric vehicles. In addition to electric vehicle chargers, that project will also feature natural gas stations along certain freight corridors and hydrogen stations in densely populated urban areas.
