Canada is among the top three countries experiencing the biggest decrease in car production since the pandemic, according to insurance firm GoShorty.
A total of 288,235 cars were produced in 2021, along with 826,767 commercial vehicles — placing total production for the year at 1,115,002 units, based on the data. The decrease in production from 2020-2021 was -19 per cent.
“The low production numbers, down from 1.4 million in 2020 and close to two million in 2019, came as the global auto sector was hit by a shortage of semiconductor chips caused by pandemic-related production issues and a surge in demand for electronics,” said GoShorty in a news release.
Slovenia ranked first as the country experiencing the largest decline in vehicle car production, with 95,797 cars produced in 2021 (no commercial vehicles were produced). The decrease in production from 2020-2021 was -32 per cent.
“This records a decrease from the previous number of 141,714 units for Dec 2020,” said GoShorty. “Global car manufacturers like Renault have made plans to cut production in the country. Renault has cut production in its Revoz Slovenia unit and reduced its staff by 350 people.”
Uzbekistan ranked third on the list with 236,667 passenger cars produced in 2021, along with 4,982 commercial vehicles. The decrease in production from 2020-2021 was -15 per cent. However, GoShorty said that despite the reduction in production Uzbekistan increased the export of cars by more than a third.
Other countries that ranked on the list include Germany, Serbia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Romania, Czech Republic, and Hungary.
The three countries with the highest increases in car production in 2021 were Argentina, Indonesia, and India. It is also worth noting that China produced the most cars and commercial vehicles that same year, manufacturing a total of 26 million units.
