Accelerating the electric vehicle revolution from racetrack to road

From the commuter car charging in your garage to a Formula E race car, the electric evolution has brought about a massive change in what we think of as an engine, and what that engine needs to keep going.

To help better understand this evolution to electric vehicles, Castrol conducted a massive survey of nearly 10,000 consumers, fleet managers and industry specialists across eight of the world’s most important EV markets to identify the global tipping points to EV purchase for consumers, fleets and EV Specialists.

Castrol’s “Accelerating the EVolution” study found that collaboration and consumer education is the key to achieving the tipping points to mainstream EV adoption.

When it came to the global consumer, price was the number one tipping point at $36,000. The second was charge time, at 31 minutes; the third was range; the fourth was infrastructure for charging EVs; and the fifth was vehicle choice.

“To make the future of mobility a reality will require significant collaboration and co-engineering across a long and complex global supply chain,” said Hasan Zobairi, VP Marketing, Wakefield Canada, Castrol’s strategic partner in Canada. “It’s estimated by 2040 that there could be one billion electrified cars and trucks in the vehicle park. Castrol ON offers OEM partners and consumers a full range of advanced EV Fluids to meet the challenging technical demands of current and future electric vehicles.”

While electric motors are different, they still need the right maintenance and fluids to operate optimally. Castrol ON has been developing specific automotive fluids designed to optimize the performance of electric vehicles (EVs), and they have teamed up with the Jaguar Formula E Team to put those “EV Fluids” to the ultimate test.

The Jaguar I-Type 5  has dazzled Formula E fans around the globe with its acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in an astonishing 2.8 seconds, which clearly puts the ultimate strain on the motor under the hood. New Castrol ON EV Fluid technologies keep EVs running at peak performance, on the track—and on the road.

Castrol ON has become the official EV Fluids partner of the Jaguar Formula E Team, and is working with the racing team at Jaguar to formulate and test the next generation of high-performance fluids for tomorrow’s electric vehicles. This entails pioneering research of new EV Fluids, testing and monitoring methods, and supporting a shared goal of helping drive the global transition to electric vehicles.

“Castrol’s engineers work alongside our own to overcome challenges and find performance gains,” said James Barclay, Jaguar Racing Team Director. “From e-Greases that improve efficiency and reduce rolling resistance, to e-Thermal fluids and e-Transmission fluids that keep the powertrain operating at optimum level, racing is the perfect test-bed to hone our respective products. Together this is proving to be a winning partnership.”

The race team development of Castrol ON e-Transmission Fluid has focused on reducing friction and power losses, improving oil pressure supply and reducing temperatures within the critical components of the gearbox. This is helping to extend the life of the powertrain and improve efficiency—critical factors for race and road EVs alike.

“Putting EV Fluids to the test on the racetrack delivers what drivers want: to go further on a single charge by enabling better efficiency throughout the powertrain,” says Barclay. “Castrol’s partnership with Jaguar Racing’s Formula E Team is part of our wider ambition to play a key role in the e-mobility revolution.”

Castrol ON e-Thermal Fluid has been designed to keep the Jaguar I-TYPE 5’s power electronic system cool under extreme and demanding racing conditions. Castrol ON e-thermal fluid will enable future EVs to be charged more rapidly, a crucial requirement as demand for ultra-fast charging capabilities increases.

Castrol ON EV Fluid technologies have been tested to the limit on the racetrack before reaching the road, where they’re already extending the life of e-vehicles made by the world’s favourite EV brands.

The new Castrol ON product line-up in Canada is intended to allow electric vehicles to go further, faster, longer with greater efficiency, cooler batteries and extended life. The company’s three available EV Fluids are: Castrol ON, e-Greases, Castrol ON, e-Thermal Fluids, and Castrol ON, e-Transmission Fluids.
