Aviva Canada, a property and casualty insurance group, plans to bring Level 2 electric vehicle chargers to seven under-served communities in Ontario that lack EV infrastructure.
The company will do this through its Charged for Change initiative. Thanks to a $3 million partnership with Earth Day Canada, communities can apply for funding to receive charging stations that include six to 10 Level 2 EV chargers.
“We know that accessibility to charging infrastructure is key for Canadians considering transitioning to EVs,” said Aviva Canada’s CEO Jason Storah in a statement. “We are proud to partner with Earth Day Canada to bring electric vehicle charging stations to these communities through our Charged for Change initiative.”
The communities selected to receive the EV charging stations this year are the Township of Manitouwadge, Town of Thessalon, Municipality of East Ferris, Township of Essa, Township of Selwyn, the County of Prince Edward, and the Town of Pelham.
Storah said the company believes that these types of programs “can help more Canadians across the country make the switch to a low-carbon economy.”
Through the Earth Day Canada partnership, Aviva will work with municipalities and utility suppliers over the next three years to install EV charging station infrastructure in certain communities.
“The negative consequences of climate change can only be countered with immediate action,” said Valérie Mallamo, Executive Director, Earth Day Canada, in a statement.
She added that these types of programs can help communities, who are deterred by the lack of public infrastructure and resources available, actually transition to electric vehicles.
