GTA airport to get Ontario’s first public hydrogen filling station

The alternative fuel option is spreading with more enthusiasm across Canada: the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Carlsun Energy recently announced that the airport will feature Ontario’s first public hydrogen filling station.

The hydrogen filling station is for both vehicles and transport trucks. The news was announced on July 6 at the GTAA Admin Building in Toronto, Ont.

“Toronto Pearson, as an economic and aviation hub, is the ideal location for Ontario’s first public hydrogen filling station for light and heavy-duty vehicles,” said Deborah Flint, President and CEO of the GTAA, in a statement.

A number of people were in attendance for the event, including representatives from Natural Resources Canada, GTAA, Carlsun Energy, the Hydrogen Business Council, and the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association. All provided remarks.

“With a significant share of Canada’s emissions coming from the transportation sector in Ontario, it’s imperative that we start deploying hydrogen infrastructure in transportation corridors,” said Jason Van Geel, President of Carlsun Energy, in a statement. He added that the team is “thrilled” to be working with Toronto Pearson and Natural Resources Canada.

The project is being funded by a $1 million federal investment from Natural Resources Canada. The station will be built, owned, and operated by Carlsun Energy.
