Volta to launch first battery copper foil factory for EVs in Canada

Volta Energy Solutions announced that it is launching the first battery copper foil factory for electric vehicles in Canada in Granby, Québec.

The company is a subsidiary of Solus Advanced Materials located in South Korea. It plans to actively contribute to the development of the EV battery industry.

“Copper foil plays an essential role as a current collector in the construction of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in EVs,” said Dejae Chin, Chairman of Solus Advanced Materials and Volta Energy Solutions, in a statement.

He added that Québec’s geographical location (conserved strategic as it provides “privileged” access to the North American market), and the province’s political commitment to making EV battery production a key sector of its economy, is what made Québec the ideal location for Volta’s first North American factory.

“The support of the Québec and Canadian governments as well as the City of Granby was crucial to the success of this inauguration,” said Chin. “Our team is committed to increasing the efficiency of the local EV battery supply chain for years to come.”

Mass production is expected in 2026, when the company aims to aims to sell its product to customers in North America. This initial launch aims to produce 25,000 tons of copper foil per year, increasing to 63,000 tons per year in phase 2. Overall, Volta said this represents 2,500,000 EVs on the road.
